25 Inexpensive Ways to Conserve on Water Usage without
Feeling the Effects
Think of Water Conservation as not only being friendly to
our planet but also saving money while taking care of our future. These ideas
can be implemented with zero to minimum cost and without feeling like you are
cutting your water usage back to much.
1. Find and fix leaks – One small leak can account for as much as 55 gallons of water wasted per year. Call Water Source Plumbing for your annual plumbing inspection!
2. Install low-flow shower heads – This can help to conserve up to 75% more water than a regular shower head
3. Turn the faucet off while brushing your teeth, shaving, and washing hands. Don’t let the water continuously run… even on low.
4. Turn the faucet on low. You don’t have to run water full blast to rinse the soap off the dishes!
5. Fill the Dishwasher – never run a partial load. Waste less water and power!
6. Use 1 Cup per Day – Pick a cup to drink out of for the day and stick with it. This will save you on the amount of dishes to wash later.
7. Soak your dishes – By scrubbing under running water you not only spend more of your energy but you waste more water.
8. Thaw your food without water – Take out your food the day before and set in your refrigerator to defrost. This can save a tremendous amount of water.
9. Cover your Pans while cooking – Hot water evaporates fast! Make sure you cover your pasta and soup and use less energy to cook J
10. Use a bowl to wash your Fruits and Veggies – Use a bowl and conserve water by rinsing and reusing your fruit water to rinse your veggies in too.
11. Reuse Boiling Water – use while boiling on ant hills (instead of chemicals) or cool to use over plants
12. Use a Broom Outside – Use a broom to sweep off the porch, sidewalk, and driveway instead of your garden hose
13. Schedule your Lawn Watering around the weather forecast – Don’t water when rain is on the way
14. Water your Houseplants with Ice Cubes! What a great use for those ice cubes that fall on the floor out of the freezer! J
15. Use a bowl of water when shaving – Ladies and Men! Take a time out and instead of using running water – place a bowl on the sink or tub and rinse your razor in it.
16. Don’t put dead bugs in the toilet. Just put the tissue in the trash and save a flush!
17. Adjust your Washing Machine loads settings – make sure you adjust your water level to the load; no sense in washing a few items as a large load.
18. Running a sprinkler two hours can use up to 500 gallons of water! Make sure you adjust your sprinklers so that you are not watering paved areas and use a timer if possible.
19. Use a tuna can while watering your grass – when the can becomes full you will know your yard has been saturated enough. A lot of time the water you apply evaporates before being absorbed in the roots.
20. Utilize your water meter to check for water leaks – Check your house meter while no water is in use – try a two hour time table. Your meter should not change at all! If it does… you have a leak!
21. Put a plastic bottle (we used to say a brickJ) in your toilet tank… this could save up to ten gallons of water per day!
22. Keep water in the fridge! You can waste a lot of water by waiting to fill up a glass of COLD water.
23. Turn off the hose while washing your car. Ask the kids or your spouse to come and help wash by putting them in charge of the water hose or have them suds the vehicle up. This will save gallons of water per wash.
24. Insulate your pipes – Inside and Outdoors. You will be able to keep the heat in your water pipes longer and therefore save time getting to the desired temp while conserving water.
